Pootjesglas on display in my studio

Page from "Dutch Type" by Jan Middendorp, showing samples from my collection

Thursday Feb 11 th was type evening in Zefir7 with Paul van der Laan and Pieter van Rosmalen (Bold Monday). Main topic was the recent release of their corporate font for Audi, on which they worked on for almost 3 years. The presentation finished with a short introduction by myself on the ‘project Pootjes’, a study on a lettering system for shop display purposes, known as ‘Pootjesglas’. Small glass panels sporting 30’s style lettering in a lineair manner, often gold on green or oxblood, silver on black, seen between 1945 and 1975 in shoe stores, furr shops, piano show rooms and the like. After a short story about the excentric mr. Willem Pootjes, I showed some samples from the collections of Museum Hilversum and my own as well as some 80’s photographs of mr. Piet Schreuders who was attending the lecture himself. The project Pootjes plans for a revival font by Bold Monday and a booklet for which I am still trying to find a publisher.
